Root-cause testing

Functional medicine in Morgan Hill

For the patient who has been told everything looks fine and still doesn’t feel fine. Deep history plus specialty lab testing, interpreted by an ADAPT Trained Practitioner.

The approach

One body, not eleven specialists

Typically, in today’s health care system you see a doctor for each part of your body. A podiatrist for your feet, an orthopedist for your shoulder, a cardiologist for your heart. Those physicians are specialists in their field — but it is often helpful to know how our body systems interrelate.

Functional medicine sees the body as a whole: how it is operating within itself, and how it’s being affected by the surrounding environment. It is important to take this approach if you want to find the root cause and not just treat symptoms. We try hard to find the “why” instead of just managing a disease — and that includes what we eat, drink, breathe, and even how well you sleep.

Who this tends to help

Patients whose labs read “normal” but who are tired, bloated, foggy, anxious or gaining weight without explanation. Patients who’ve been handed a prescription for a symptom without anyone asking what caused it. Patients managing a chronic issue who want to understand the mechanism rather than just suppress the signal.

What we’re not

We’re not a replacement for your primary care physician, and we’ll tell you plainly when something belongs with them or with a specialist. We don’t promise cures, and we don’t sell a protocol before we’ve seen your data.

Testing

Common causes of symptoms and chronic disease we test for

Which panels you actually need is decided at your initial consult, based on your history — not ordered as a bundle.

Gastrointestinal issues

SIBO, GERD (reflux), leaky gut, food intolerance and sensitivity, gut dysbiosis, H. pylori, IBS/IBD.

Nutrient imbalances

Exploring deficiencies and toxicities, including iron, B12, folate, magnesium and vitamin D.

HPA axis dysregulation

Assessing the balance between your brain and your adrenal glands; measuring cortisol levels and other markers of stress.

Hormone imbalances

Blood sugar regulation, thyroid function, melatonin, and sex hormone baselines.

Know exactly what your first visits look like

Nobody likes walking into an appointment blind. Here’s the actual sequence, with honest time estimates.

  1. Initial Examination

Collecting and discussing a detailed health history is of utmost importance. A thorough physical exam may include neurological and orthopedic testing, posture analysis and joint range-of-motion evaluation. If needed, we offer digital X-rays on site. Expect ample one-on-one time with the doctor.

    About 1 hour
  2. Report of Findings

We want you in the loop. We detail your treatment plan, treatment frequency, and the results of your exam and/or X-ray. We’ll discuss what to expect in the coming weeks, during a typical treatment, and what our approach to your condition will be.

    About 30 minutes
  3. Ongoing Treatment

We use a variety of techniques to tailor an individualized treatment. From traditional manual adjustments to low-force tool-based adjustments, your comfort is our first priority. We use heat, traction (stretching) tables, and percussion to promote relaxation prior to your adjustment.

    About 20 minutes

Times are approximate. Not sure which appointment you need? Call (408) 778-6770 and we’ll help you decide.

Functional medicine questions

Is functional medicine covered by insurance?

Generally no. Consult time, specialty lab panels and supplements are usually out of pocket, though some patients can submit lab work to an HSA or FSA. We quote everything up front — you will never receive a surprise invoice from us. [VERIFY: current consult and panel price ranges, and HSA/FSA eligibility.]

How is this different from my primary care doctor?

Your PCP is looking for disease. Functional medicine looks at function on the way there: the same thyroid panel read against a narrower optimal range, gut testing your PCP is unlikely to order, and a history long enough to spot the pattern. It’s complementary, not a replacement — keep your PCP.

My bloodwork came back normal. What would you find?

“Normal” on a standard panel means “not diseased,” which is a low bar and not the same as well. We also test things standard panels rarely include: stool analysis, food sensitivity and autoimmune reactivity, cortisol rhythm, full thyroid panels rather than TSH alone, and advanced lipid markers.

Do I have to take a pile of supplements?

No. Supplements are one tool and not the first one — diet, sleep, movement and stress usually move the needle further. Where a supplement is recommended it’s because a specific lab finding supports it, and it comes with a reason and a review date.

How long before I feel different?

It varies genuinely, which is why we won’t give you a number here. Gut protocols often show change within weeks; hormone and HPA axis work is measured in months. You check in every two to six weeks so nobody is guessing in the meantime.

Where do the labs get processed?

Through established specialty laboratories — Genova Diagnostics, Cyrex Laboratories, BioHealth and Doctor’s Data among them. Dr. Diana holds the ADAPT Trained Practitioner designation from Kresser Institute, which is the training that governs how those results are interpreted.
